If we are to read the Bible in historical context, then we must also read it in practical context as in the ends and means of what was said.

It is as you have said- Followers must be prepared to make the break should there be a need. Thus the talk of leaving the family. Is there a need now?

I think the historical considerations actually makes the whole thing less extreme. Just think, if there is no historical considerations at all, and those passages are indeed taken at face value, then what.
